This is a blended course, you must complete the online portion prior to your class.

  • Access the HeartCode BLS eLearning at https://shopcpr.heart.org/heartcode-bls to register and complete the online portion - $37.00.
  • Please add the HeartCode BLS eLearning to cart, checkout by registering and complete prior to your class.
  • PRINT OUT the certificate from the online portion and bring it with you to the VHC class. you can print the certificate in your deparment.  You cannot take the class without the PRINTED CERTIFICATE, if you arrive without it, you will be asked to reschedule and charged for the missed class. Showing a copy of the certificate on your phone is not acceptable.   
  • You must take the classroom portion no more than 60-days after completing the online portion.

If you have issues accessing the website, please copy and paste link into Google Chrome. Complete the online course and obtain the certificate. Bring the certificate with you to class. Certificates are only good for 60 days. If you show up to the class without the certificate, or arrive after the start time, you will not be allowed in the class and you will be charged a no show fee (see terms and conditions for more details).

About the class:

Class duration is 2 hours. No "Drop In" students will be allowed, all students must be registered for the class. Children of attendees are not allowed. CPR eCards are issued within 20 business days after class completion. Participants will receive an email from the American Heart Association (AHA) with instructions on how to claim their cards. Reimbursement of online portion fee ($37.00) may be requested through employee's manager. Slip provided after class must be provided to your manager as proof of course completion until your eCard is available. If you took the online portion and had to pay $37.00, your manager will give you a petty cash slip to take to the cashier for reimbursement. Please allow ample time for travel and/or parking arrangements, as late arrivals will not be allowed to participate in the class.

**Once you have completed the course requirements your card will be issued within 20 business days, in accordance with AHA Guidelines.**

Terms and Conditions for BLS:

VHC Employees – if BLS is required for current position: employee will pay $37.00 for online portion, which will be reimbursed after successful completion of the classroom portion; there is no charge for the classroom portion unless the employees fails to attend or does not provide at least 72 hours’ notice of cancelation.  Failure to attend or cancel 72 hours prior will result in a $25 deduction from the next paycheck. If you show up to the class without the certificate, or arrive after the start time, you will not be allowed in the class and you will be charged a no show fee.

VHC Employees – if BLS is not required for current position: employee will pay $37.00 for online portion, which will not be reimbursed; there is a $50 charge for the classroom portion, due at time of registration. Failure to attend or cancel before 72 hours will result in a $25 deduction from the next paycheck. If you show up to the class without the certificate,  or arrive after the start time, you will not be allowed in the class and you will be charged a no show fee.

Non-VHC Employees – Payment due at time of registration. There will be no refund if the participant fails to attend or cancels less than 72 hours in advance. If you show up to the class without the certificate, or arrive after the start time, you will not be allowed in the class and you will be charged a no show fee.

 

***Staff requiring ACLS in their job description no longer need to maintain BLS separately. If an employee would like to maintain a certification not required for their job description the employee will be charged for the class and will not be reimbursed.

This course teaches skills for saving lives after cardiac arrest, and is geared for providers in both in-facility and prehospital settings. It requires the inherent performance of physical skills that may be arduous and possibly result in physical strain or injury. You must advise your instructor of any physical limitations, injuries or disabilities that require accommodation at least two (2) business days prior to your scheduled course by sending an e-mail to cpr@vhchealth.org You understand passing a skills test is an American Heart Association course completion requirement, and that limitations which prevent you from doing so will prohibit your receipt of a course completion card or eCard. Please be aware that you will spend a great deal of time on the floor on your hands and knees.

If you have any medical or cardiac history that may be aggravated by the performance of physical activity, you should consult your physician and ask for advice as to whether you should participate in this course.

ACLS Provider Initial Course

This program is sponsored by the Virginia Hospital Center in accordance with the most current guidelines established by the AHA to attain skill in responding to adult emergency situations.  The target audience for ACLS Provider Courses are those who respond to medical emergencies including physicians, nurses and respiratory therapists.

You will be clocking in and out while attending this course. It is your responsibility to ensure your unit work schedule reflects your registration. Working the night preceding or following this course will prohibit you from attending and you will be turned away at the door.

Course Preparation and Requirements

Prior knowledge of basic arrhythmias is required. It is highly recommended to have taken the Basic Dysrhythmia Course prior to taking ACLS.

Review, understand, and complete the precourse self-assessment (mandatory). This test consists of 3 sections: ECG rhythm identification, pharmacology, and practical application. Use this assessment to identify areas where you need to increase your knowledge.

Use the following steps to access the self-assessment:

  2. Select ACLS Precourse Self Assessment and click Launch Course to begin.

Note: If you haven’t already logged in, the system will ask you to do so. If you haven’t visited the site before, you’ll be prompted to set up an account.

You MUST either print your precourse self-assessment score or provide a screenshot and bring it to class: a passing score of 70% or above is required for the precourse self-assessment. You can take the precourse self-assessment as many times as needed to achieve a passing score.Those without a copy of the self-assessment will not be permitted to stay and will need to reschedule.  It is recommended that you review the materials in the ACLS Provider Manual prior to completing the self-assessment.

Course Materials

Required AHA text: Advanced Cardiac Life Support Provider Manual (published in 2020). Hospital employees may sign out a manual from the Nursing Staff Development department (located next to Classroom #3) for one month prior to the course. You will be required to sign the book out and sign the terms and conditions for the return of books. Books that have been lost/damaged will have an automatic paycheck deduction of $60.00 applied.

ACLS Provider Manuals are also available for purchase in hard copy and ebooks in several languages through AHA distributors including www.channing-bete.com

Charge Nurse Academy

Course Description:

The Charge Nurse Academy class is a 7.3 hour session designed to prepare nurses with or without Charge Nurse experience for the role of a Charge Nurse at VHC Health.  The class focuses on communication, conflict resolution, delegation, generational similarities, different resources that Charge Nurses have throughout the hospital, as well as staffing and budgetary introductions.  We allow 14 students in each class and provide opportunities for break out activities, role play, and discussion.  Manager approval is required for the class and 6.33 contact hours are provided. You will be clocking in and out while attending this class.  It is your responsibility to ensure your unit work schedule reflects your registration. Working the night shift preceding or following this class will prohibit you from attending and you will be turned away at the door.

About the Class:

Please arrive early and be in your seat at the start time of the class. You will not be allowed late entry. No "Drop In" students will be allowed, all students must be registered for the class. Children of attendees are not allowed. Upon successful completion of the class, participants will be given a link and QR Code to complete a survey. A  Contact Hour certificate of completion will be available once you have completed the survey.  You can then upload it into PEEPS.

Clinical Technician 2

Course Description:

The purpose of this course is to advance skills and knowledge. Prior to enrolling in this course you must have your immediate supervisor's approval and meet the performance requirements on the ladder. Please note, this is a multi day course. Attendance of all days is required. Ensure you are able to attend all classes prior to registration (please check all dates and times closely). 

About the class:

Please arrive early and be in your seat at the start time of the class. You will not be allowed late entry. No "Drop In" students will be allowed, all students must be registered for the class. Children of attendees are not allowed. Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be given a certificate of completion that you may upload into Workday.   

The Clinical Technician II Course is a hands-on learning experience. During the course you will come into close contact with others and be exposed to potentially sensitive topics related to human anatomy.

Clinical Technician 3

Course Description:

The purpose of this course is for advancement in the Clinical Technician Ladder. Prior to enrolling in this course you must have your immediate supervisor's approval and meet the performance requirements on the ladder (see link below).

Prior to class:

This is a blended course, you must complete the online portion prior to your class. Access HealthStream and search in the catalog for VHC-Clinical Technician III: Core 2023. If you have difficulty accessing HealthStream please contact the HealthStream Administrator at extension #1063.Complete the online course and obtain the certificate. Bring the certificate with you to class. If you show up to the class without the certificate, you will not be allowed in the class and you will be charged a no show fee (see terms and conditions for more details).

You will also come into contact with bodily fluids and practice essential skills on partners, such as IV placement.

MOAB - ***FOR ED, BHU, & SECURITY***

Management of Aggressive Behavior (MOAB)

Course Information:

Virginia Hospital Center values the safety of its staff and has recognized this alarming trend. In order to help maintain a safe working environment, ED, BHU, and Security staff  must be certified in the Management of Aggressive Behavior (MOAB). MOAB is a comprehensive de-escalation and safety training that is specifically designed to give healthcare workers a solid knowledge and kinetic base to help keep our working environment safe.

Class will consist of a lecture/didactic portion and physical skills (6 hours):

  • A lecture portion will provide review of information covered in the text book and demonstration of skills. The instructors will review the pre-test and clarify any points, (90-120 minutes).
  • Test - a short 10-question test from the text and lecture material, (30 minutes).
  • Physical skills portion – learning blocks, removing self, basic restraints, and more! (3 hours)
    • Please come prepared for class - we will be moving around a lot!
    • Bring water and snacks
    • Wear comfortable clothing and shoes (preferably scrubs, work uniforms, tennis shoes, or appropriate workout attire. Please do not wear revealing clothing, jewelry, sandals, or flip-flops)
    • Arrive on time or early. You will not be permitted into class once it has started – and you will be charged as a no-show ($50).

The target audience for NRP Provider Courses are those health care professionals involved in any aspect of neonatal resuscitation to include nurses, physicians, neonatal nurse practitioners, physician assistants and respiratory therapists.

PARTICIPANT ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The Neonatal Resuscitation Program® (NRP®) course conveys an evidence-based approach to care of the newborn at birth and facilitates effective team-based care for healthcare professionals who care for newborns at the time of delivery. NRP utilizes a blended learning approach, which includes online testing, online case-based simulations, and hands-on case-based simulation/debriefing that focus on critical leadership, communication, and team-work skills.

Completion of the program does not imply that an individual has the competence to perform neonatal resuscitation. Each hospital is responsible for determining the level of competence and qualifications required for someone to assume clinical responsibility for neonatal resuscitation.

CAUTION: The American Academy of Pediatrics has been advised that there are entities offering NRP "certification" or "verification" cards through online courses. Please be advised that these entities are not affiliated, associated with, or connected to AAP and they have no authority from AAP or the American Heart Association to issue cards. The cards issued by these entities are not official AAP/AHA NRP Course Completion cards.​​

PALS Initial 2-Day Course

This program is sponsored by the Virginia Hospital Center in accordance with the most current guidelines established by the AHA. The course is designed to develop skill and confidence in addressing pediatric emergencies.

You will be clocking in and out while attending this course. It is your responsibility to ensure your unit work schedule reflects your registration. Working the night preceding or following this course will prohibit you from attending and you will be turned away at the door.

Course Preparation and Requirements

Review, understand, and complete the precourse self-assessment (mandatory). This test consists of 3 sections: ECG rhythm identification, pharmacology, and practical application. Use this assessment to identify areas where you need to increase your knowledge.

Use the following steps to access the self-assessment:

  1. Visit elearning.heart.org/course/427
  2. Select PALS Precourse Self Assessment and click Launch Course to begin.

Note: If you haven’t already logged in, the system will ask you to do so. If you haven’t visited the site before, you’ll be prompted to set up an account.

You MUST either print your precourse self-assessment score or provide a screenshot and bring it to class: a passing score of 70% or above is required for the precourse self-assessment. You can take the precourse self-assessment as many times as needed to achieve a passing score.Those without a copy of the self-assessment will not be permitted to stay and will need to reschedule.  It is recommended that you review the materials in the PALS Provider Manual prior to completing the self-assessment.

 

Course Materials

Required AHA text: Pediatric Advanced Life Support Provider Manual (published in 2020). Hospital employees may sign out a manual from the ED for one month prior to the course, please reach out to your uni educator (ED, PACU, or MB/Peds) to arrange a time to pick up a manual. You will be required to sign the book out and sign the terms and conditions for the return of books. Books that have been lost/damaged will have an automatic paycheck deduction of $60.00 applied.

PALS Provider Manuals are also available for purchase in hard copy and ebooks in several languages through AHA distributors including www.channing-bete.com

 **Once you have completed the course requirements your card will be issued within 20 business days, in accordance with AHA Guidelines.**

PARTICIPANT ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

This course teaches skills for saving lives after cardiac arrest, and is geared for providers in both in-facility and prehospital settings. It requires the inherent performance of physical skills that may be arduous and possibly result in physical strain or injury. You must advise your instructor of any physical limitations, injuries or disabilities that require accommodation at least two (2) business days prior to your scheduled course by sending an e-mail to cpr@vhchealth.org. You understand passing a skills test is an American Heart Association course completion requirement, and that limitations which prevent you from doing so will prohibit your receipt of a course completion card or eCard. Please be aware that you may spend a great deal of time on the floor on your hands and knees.

If you have any medical or cardiac history that may be aggravated by the performance of physical activity, you should consult your physician and ask for advice as to whether you should participate in this course.

CPR/ACLS/PALS training sessions involve close physical contact with other students. If you are ill or have an infection, including but not limited to open sores on your mouth or hands, please reschedule your class for your safety and the safety of the other participants.

Terms and Conditions for PALS:

VHC Employees - PALS required for current position: will not be charged a course fee unless they fail to attend or cancel less than 2 weeks’ notice. Failure to attend or cancel will result in $300.00 being deducted from your next paycheck.

VHC Employees - PALS not required for current position: payment due at time of registration. Cost for employees is $300.00.  Reimbursement for cancellation is limited to 2 weeks’ notice.

Non-VHC Employees - Payment due at time of registration. Cost for one day renewal is $300. Reimbursement for cancellation is limited to 2 weeks’ notice.

Preceptor Course - 101

Course Description:

The preceptor course is a 4 hour session designed to prepare nurses, therapists and VHCPG medical assistants to help new employees transition to their roles. The class focuses on the following topics:

Roles of the  Preceptor, Teaching and Learning Styles, Adult Learning Principals, Generational Connections, Benner’s Novice to Expert Skill Acquisition, Giving Effective Feedback, Conflict Resolution, and Tools/ Resources for the Preceptor. Manager approval is required.

The class is limited to 20 students. 3.9 contact hours are awarded.

Prior to enrolling in this course please review the required criteria below:

  • Manager approval must be recieved
  • Must complete initial 90 days of hire
  • Last evaluation must be commendable or higher
  • Recommended greater than 6 months experience

About the Class:

Please arrive early and be in your seat at the start time of the class. You will not be allowed late entry. No "Drop In" students will be allowed, all students must be registered for the class. Children of attendees are not allowed. Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be given a link to complete a survey. A Contact Hour certificate of completion will be emailed to you after you complete the survey, staff are responsible for saving this certificate.

S.T.A.B.L.E. is the most widely distributed and implemented neonatal education program to focus exclusively on the post-resuscitation/pre-transport stabilization care of sick infants. Based on a mnemonic to optimize learning, retention and recall of information, S.T.A.B.L.E. stands for the six assessment and care modules in the program: Sugar, Temperature, Airway, Blood pressure, Lab work, and Emotional support. Provider manual is required. VHC employees may borrow a manual from a Staff Development Specialist in WIH.

The S.T.A.B.L.E. Program is taught over one day in a didactic-interactive format by experts in neonatal nursing. The NICU educator will assign you the pre-learning content in Healthstream a month in advance of the class. You must complete this prior to your class. PRINT AND BRING THE COMPLETED CERTIFICATE TO THE CLASS. If this is not completed prior to the class, you will be prohibited from attending and you will be turned away at the door. This certificate contains information that the instructor is required to input into the S.T.A.B.L.E database in order for you certification card to be generated.

The target audience for the S.T.A.B.L.E course are those health care professionals involved in any aspect of neonatal care to include nurses, physicians, neonatal nurse practitioners, physician assistants and respiratory therapists.

About the class:

Class duration is 8 hours. No "Drop In" students will be allowed, all students must be registered for the class. Children of attendees are not allowed. S.T.A.B.L.E. Certification cards are issued upon successful completion of the post-test and will be given to you approximately one week after the class. Please allow ample time for travel and/or parking arrangements, as late arrivals will not be allowed to participate in the class.

VHC Employees – if S.T.A.B.L.E. is NOT required for current position: there is a $100 charge for the classroom portion, due at time of registration. Failure to attend or cancel before 72 hours will result in a $100 deduction from the next paycheck. If you show up to the class without the completed content, or arrive after the start time, you will not be allowed in the class and you will be charged a no show fee.

    VHCPG New Hire Competency Check-off class

    This 2-hour Skills Check-Off session is for all new MA's in VHCPG, who were hired within the last 90 days, and who have completed at least 3 weeks in-clinic training with a preceptor/trainer.

    You must have also been properly trained, according to the VHC Competency checklists, evaluated and recommended by your Manager for final check-off. Upon completion of this class, you will prove understanding of the different Competencies and show responsibilty in performing them properly.

    The list of Competencies that you will be signed off on will be emailed to you upon sign up.
